Glass Cutters

Glass Cutters The stained glass maker's most important tool, a good quality glass cutter is key to easy and successful glass cutting. A self-lubricating pistol grip is the easiest to use, both in it's design and that it continuously oils the cutting wheel to allow it to move freely over the glass surface. It is also easier to hold for extended periods and keep at the proper angle. It costs a bit more than non-lubricated (also known as dry) cutters, but for the hobbyist stained glass maker, it is an excellent investment. Prices run from about $20 to $35.

Regular non-lubricated glass cutters require adding oil to the glass surface while you work, which requires some practice to keep from making a mess. They do allow for making scores in tight spots. Pricing runs from $6 to about $35 for cutters for particular types of glass.

There also small table model glass cutters that allow you to put the glass into the cutter mechanism, set the cutter and then push your glass through the glass cutter. These are excellent for production work, long pieces and for folks who have a hard time bending over the cutting area.
